What happens if I enable Developer Mode on a site where the design is already done and everything is ready for launch?

So my problem is this; I want to change certain things on the blog page (Read More, Next and Previous links) from English to Norwegian. I've more or less figured out how to do this with code inject, but the site will still display "Read More" for a fraction of a second when loading the page before it changes to "Les mer". That isn't ideal and looks kind of unprofessional.

So I figured this was the kind of thing that could be solved rather easily in Developer Mode. So I made a new trial page just to try it out, and I managed to change what the links said without problems. The problem occurs when I try to enable developer mode on the already finished site in question. When I try to enable developer mode my screen turns red and I get a box telling me that "swicthing to Developer Mode will replace your current template with an editable developer template. Your site will look drastically different after this change until you edit your template manually. In order to edit your developer template you will need SFTP and an enviroment where you can edit HTML. Do you wish to continue?".

I didn't get this message on the trial site, and I didn't notice anything different about the template after enabling it. So what I'm wondering is this; what will happen if I enable Developer Mode on my site? Will I have to manually redesign everything from scratch again? And if I enable Developer Mode in order to do these changes, will I need to continue having Developer Mode enabled in order for the changes to take effect?
