Where to put CSS if I want to have a hover effect on pictures at homepage gridgallery ?

I am new here and I have several things I would like to change. I use the Montauk Template and would like to have a transparent black with text when hovering with the mouse over the picture. I just don´t know where to add and what exactly to do.
