Is there a way to display the Author's Name in the URL string instead of the author ID?

When you link to an blog that is filtered by author, you'll see something like this:

/blog/?author=50786fd3e4b3a208a5f8b266

I was wondering if you could somehow link to it using the human readable author name, like:

/blog/?author=John Smith

I do not wish to use redirects, I'd like the Author Name to be in the URL bar as the actual URL, similar to how Blog Categories are.
