Can I link the index images in flatiron template to regular pages so that I keep the hover effect?

I would like to be able to keep the hover effect without using the rigid layout of how flatiron formats the pages. Can I link the index images to regular pages?

OR

Is there CSS I can use to create the hover effect on regular pages so that I can create my own index. I find the way the linked pages from the grid index are structured to be way too rigid, plus you can't add blocks etc. to them.
